The federal government adopted a case mix reimbursement system based on the Minimum Data Set 2.0 (MDS 2.0) for Medicare long-term care reimbursement in 1998. Several states also use the MDS to set case mix reimbursement for Medicaid-certified nursing facilities. Continued financial prosperity in the case mix era requires a proactive approach  to the MDS.
